Ford Dealer Serving Chester, Chesterfield, Richmond, and the Tri-Cities
Ford buying and financing guide for Chester, VA
What you'll pay to drive a new Ford home in Virginia comes down to four numbers: the sale price, the state's 4.15% sales and use tax, your loan rate, and what your trade is worth. On a $50,000 F-150, the state tax alone is $2,075, and Virginia charges it before your trade-in is subtracted.
This guide walks through every line on a Virginia buyer's order, the new federal car loan interest deduction, and how the Haley Advantage protects you after you sign. It's written for buyers in Chester, Chesterfield, Midlothian, Colonial Heights and the south side of Richmond.
What it costs to buy a car in Virginia, line by line
Virginia's DMV collects a 4.15% Motor Vehicle Sales and Use Tax when the vehicle is titled. It's figured on the gross sales price after rebates and incentives, with a $75 minimum. There's no local add-on, so the rate is the same whether you live in Midlothian or Hopewell (Virginia DMV).
| Line on your buyer's order | What it is | Example on a $50,000 F-150 |
|---|---|---|
| Sale price | Price after Ford rebates and dealer discounts | $50,000 |
| Sales and use tax (SUT) | 4.15% of the sale price, $75 minimum, collected by Virginia DMV | $2,075 |
| Title fee | Virginia DMV title fee | $15 |
| Registration | Weight-based DMV fee for one year | About $45.75 |
| Processing fee | Haley Ford's dealer processing fee, disclosed on every buyer's order | $799 |
| Trade-in credit | Subtracted after tax; it does not lower the 4.15% | Minus your trade value |
| Personal property tax | Billed later by your county or city, not at the dealership | See our car tax guide (coming Nov 24) |
Two things surprise most first-time Virginia buyers. First, the trade-in doesn't reduce your sales tax, unlike in many neighboring states. Second, the car tax bill arrives later from your locality, and the rate depends on where you live. Chesterfield, Colonial Heights, Petersburg, Prince George and the City of Richmond each set their own rate.
Tip from our finance office: Ask for an out-the-door price in writing before you talk monthly payment. A payment can be lowered by stretching the term, which hides the real cost. The out-the-door number can't hide anything.
The car loan interest deduction: which Fords qualify
If you buy a new vehicle for personal use between 2025 and 2028, you may be able to deduct up to $10,000 a year in loan interest on your federal return. You don't have to itemize to claim it. The vehicle must weigh under 14,000 pounds GVWR and have its final assembly in the United States. The deduction phases out above $100,000 of modified adjusted gross income ($200,000 for joint filers), per IRS Publication 6126.
Most of the Ford lineup is assembled in the U.S., but not all of it. The F-150, Super Duty, Ranger, Bronco, Explorer, Expedition, Mustang and Transit come from U.S. plants. The Maverick, Bronco Sport and Mustang Mach-E are built in Mexico and don't qualify. Always confirm the specific vehicle: the window sticker lists the "Final Assembly Point," and you can check any VIN with NHTSA's free VIN decoder.

What it's worth, in real numbers: A $45,000 loan at 7% APR for 60 months generates about $2,900 in interest in year one. For a buyer in the 22% federal bracket, deducting that saves roughly $640 on taxes. That's real money, but it shouldn't decide which truck you buy.
Loan example is for illustration only and is not an offer of credit; your rate and terms depend on credit approval. This is general information, not tax advice. Talk to your tax preparer about your situation.
The Haley Advantage: what comes with every purchase
Every qualified vehicle bought at Haley Ford includes the Haley Advantage at no charge:
- 90-day comprehensive limited warranty
- 3-day return window
- Lifetime Virginia state inspections
- First oil change free
- Multipoint inspections and pre-vacation checkups
- Loaner vehicles during major service
- 24-hour roadside assistance for one year
- Automatic enrollment in Haley Advantage Rewards
What does that mean in dollars? Virginia requires a safety inspection on most vehicles every year, so lifetime inspections save you that fee for as long as you own the car. The 3-day return window matters most on a used purchase: Virginia has no general "cooling-off" right to return a car, so a written return window is protection you wouldn't otherwise have.
Already bought from us? Schedule your free first oil change and your first state inspection online.
Buy a qualifying new Ford here and you also get the Lifetime Powertrain Loyalty Certificate, which covers engine and transmission repairs for as long as you own the vehicle. Read the certificate terms.
Qualified vehicles only; see dealer for details.
Financing: Ford Credit, your bank, or both

You have three common paths. Ford Credit offers manufacturer-subsidized APR and lease programs on select new models, which often beat bank rates when they're running. Banks and credit unions, including the ones many Chesterfield and Fort Lee families already use, can pre-approve you before you shop. Dealer-arranged financing lets our finance office send your application to several lenders at once.
Our recommendation: get one outside pre-approval, then let us try to beat it. You'll know your floor, and you'll walk in with leverage.
Loan term matters more than most people think. A 72- or 84-month loan lowers the payment, but you pay more interest and you're more likely to owe more than the car is worth for the first few years. If you might trade in three years, keep the term at 60 months or less, or look at a lease. Our buy-or-lease guide (coming Dec 1) runs the side-by-side math on one vehicle.
Trading in, including when you owe more than it's worth
Start with our Value Your Trade tool for a baseline, then bring the vehicle in for a firm appraisal. If you owe more than the trade is worth, that gap is called negative equity. You can pay it down, roll it into the new loan, or wait. Rolling it in is the most common choice and the most expensive one. Our negative equity guide (coming Nov 11) shows a worked example of each option.
What's different about buying here: the Chester and Richmond market
Chesterfield County added more residents than any other Virginia locality from 2020 to 2024. The Census Bureau estimates 397,148 people lived here in July 2025, up from 364,084 at the 2020 census. A lot of that growth is in Midlothian and along Route 288, where families are buying three-row SUVs and half-ton trucks that pull boats and campers on weekends.
That growth shapes how people shop. Midlothian buyers often compare us with dealers on Midlothian Turnpike and West Broad. South-side buyers from Chester, Colonial Heights and Petersburg tend to weigh drive time and service convenience as heavily as price. Fort Lee brings a steady stream of service members who need to buy, register and sometimes sell on a tight PCS timeline.
Our take: compare out-the-door prices, then compare what happens after the sale. The Haley Advantage, a Ford Certified collision center on the same campus, and Quick Lane service without an appointment are the parts of the deal that keep paying off. Owners can find everything about upkeep in our Ford service and ownership guide.

Frequently asked questions
What is the sales tax on a car in Virginia?
Virginia charges a 4.15% Motor Vehicle Sales and Use Tax on the sale price after rebates, with a $75 minimum. It's the same rate statewide and is collected when the vehicle is titled.
Does a trade-in lower my sales tax in Virginia?
No. Virginia figures the 4.15% on the vehicle's sale price before your trade-in is subtracted.
Which new Fords qualify for the car loan interest deduction?
New, personal-use Fords with final assembly in the U.S., such as the F-150, Super Duty, Ranger, Bronco, Explorer and Expedition. The Maverick, Bronco Sport and Mustang Mach-E are assembled in Mexico and don't qualify. Check the window sticker or VIN to confirm.
Can I return a car I bought at Haley Ford?
Qualified vehicles come with a 3-day return window as part of the Haley Advantage. Virginia law doesn't give buyers a general right to return a car, so ask us for the written terms before you sign. Qualified vehicles only; see dealer for details.
What does the Haley Advantage include?
A 90-day comprehensive limited warranty, a 3-day return window, lifetime Virginia state inspections, your first oil change, loaners during major service, one year of 24-hour roadside assistance and Haley Advantage Rewards. It's included at no charge on qualified vehicles.
Should I finance through Ford Credit or my bank?
Get a pre-approval from your bank or credit union first, then ask us to beat it. Ford Credit's special APR offers on select models often win when they're running.
